How do you become a Digital / Web Analyst ?
For me they are both the same but for some people it is quite different as there is also smartphone. It is obvious for me that when you work on online website analytics, you are going to get an interest on the Mobile Analytics as well. That said, we could look at what we need for it.By DA I mean: Digital Analyst and by WebA, a Web Analyst. For me they are both the same but for some people it is quite different as there is also smartphone. It is obvious for me that when you work on online website analytics, you are going to get an interest on the Mobile Analytics as well. That said, we could look at what we need for it.
Educational background for Digital / Web – Analyst
There is no specific educational, I have a Marketing Master Degree and I know people with Bachelor in Economics, other with Java Developer background. There are very few training that I know and do the learning. The best way to learn it is to look at some data and always ask yourself the ‘why’ question. It is true that ex-technical person have an advantage for this position but technical guys tend to be trust the code too much. I always say that when you choose the tool to implement, you need to stop asking question about figures but sometimes, it is important to have someone that have a more critical point of view on the numbers or only that. Technical people tend also to be constraint by the nature of the environment as non-technical will think in a different manner and for me both are mandatory in a company as it is very hard to be both in good field.
Skills
On the skills, if you landed on this website it means that you have at least one of them. Curiosity and learning are the 2 big skills that are needed for this job. A taste for figures and a quick learning mind are always welcomed but it is not necessary to get everything at the first sight, it is usually normal sometimes to need time to digest some information (unique pageview Google Analytics ). It is important however that when you get something, you get it totally and you can apply it. The theoretical point of view is good, the practical part is better.
Opportunities
The opportunities are crazy in that field. You can work with the part that you like the most and that is what I like the most. You can also try to do lots of different things. Basically, you need to know what are your strength and weakness and be ready to work on your weakness really hard. The fact is that you are going to work with very various type of data and you will learn to sort them and know which one combine with which one.Several job profiles can come out of this profession:
- Web Analytics Manager (of course)
- Tag Manager Responsible
- Test Manager
- Business Analyst
- Data Manager
- Data Architect
The good things is that you will always learn new things, and the technology and software are always evolving. You can manipulate figures all day long if you want, or just raw data without looking at their meaning, or create some tracking functionality that enable you to add new data to the reports.
